Chronological Resume

A chronological resume is:
  • a summary of facts about you.
  • a description of your academic history, volunteer and work experience, and other information about you that is relevant to employers.
  • a support document to the letter of application, the interview, the application blank, and/or the phone call.
  • neat and attractive.
The content of a chronological resume includes:
  • Personal Information
    • contains name, campus address (if necessary) with zip code, ade code and telephone number(s).
  • Career or Job Objective (optional)
    • brief statement describing exactly what you want to do.
    • utilized when objectives are very specific.
    • with broad goals or consideration of unrelated jobs, a career objective can be stated in a cover letter.
  • Education
    • list in reverse chronological order schols attended, locations, dates of attendance or graduation date, degree, and major/minor.
  • Work Experience (optional)
    • list inreverse chronological order name and location of previous employer, job title, and responsibilities.
    • briefly summarize acquired skills--use action verbs.
    • section can also be entiled "Experience," "Employment," or "Career Related Experience."
    • "Career Related Experience" and "Experience" can be seperate headings.
  • Extracurricular Activities
    • usually presented in list form
    • do not abbreviate names of clubs or organizations
    • can also be titled "Awards and Honors," "Prefessional Affiliations," "Community Activities," "Hobbies and Interest," etc.
    • include offices heldm leadership positions.
  • Personal Items (optional)
    • be aware of the legalities of empolyment inquiries and prepare resume as desired.
  • Futher Information
    • Indicate where potential employers can learn more about you.

Resume Do's:

  • One page resumes are prefered.
  • Select the type of outline form that is most appropriate for the amount of information to be included.
  • Use 8 1/2 x 11 inch high quality light colored paper.
  • Have the resume professionally printed.
  • Use brief, descriptive phrases rather than full sentences.
  • Attend resume writing workshops and review resume writing publications, avilable in the Career Resource Library.
  • Include all experience but allocate more space to your work experience that reflects your objectives.

Resume Don'ts:

  • Do not use first person singular (I, me, my, mine).
  • Do not fabricate facts.
  • Do not print your resume until you have someone to proofread it for errors.
  • Do not hurry while writing your resume--give yourself time to reflect, review, and revise.
  • Do not include any information from high school.
